Our story

What defining event led to the creation of Go Rampe?

Taxes & tax credits for buying a ramp

Are modular access ramps taxable?

Yes, all access ramps for people with reduced mobility or disabilities are taxable.

Why are permanent access ramps taxable in Canada?

Under current tax law, a permanent ramp attached to the home is no longer considered a mobile medical device, but rather a home improvement.

Are portable access ramps and threshold ramps taxable?

So-called portable ramps and threshold ramps for people with disabilities, which are mobile and can easily be carried by one person, are not taxable.

Do wheelchair ramps qualify for a tax credit?

Buying and installing a wheelchair access ramp opens the door to several tax credits that can be combined. The total credit percentage depends on your situation (age or disability), since this expense qualifies under two major streams: home accessibility and medical expenses.

See financial aid
What does the Home Accessibility stream (seniors 65+ or people with disabilities) provide?

If you carry out this work to adapt your principal residence, you can claim the accessibility credit. Federal: 14% of expenses (HATC, up to $20,000 of work, maximum credit of $2,800). Provincial (Québec): No identical credit, but at 70 or older, entitled to the tax credit for expenses incurred by a senior to maintain independence (20% on the portion > $250). Combined, a person 70+ gets a 34% total tax relief rate. Information provided for guidance only — eligibility determined by the Canada Revenue Agency.

What does the Medical Expenses stream (for anyone with a prescription/medical certificate) provide?

This stream applies to anyone with a prescription or medical certificate. In that case, the law allows the ramp purchase to be included in both the accessibility credit and your medical expenses. The medical-expense conversion rates are as follows: Federal: 15% & Provincial (Québec): 20%. Installing a ramp in Canada

Can an access ramp be installed in winter in Canada?

Yes, a modular ramp can be installed in any season. Since there is no need to dig to install these structures, it is enough to clear the snow from the ground contact points and it is done.

A tree or obstacle is in the ramp’s way — can we work around it?

Absolutely. The ramp’s layout is custom-fitted to the realities and obstacles present at the building’s entrance. The other option is to cut down trees and shrubs, if the homeowners wish.

Why aren’t screw piles required?

Access ramps rest directly on the existing ground. Ground movement caused by freezing and thawing has very little, if any, effect on the ramp. The leg height can also be easily adjusted thanks to our sliding-leg system.

Does an access ramp lower my property value?

Not at all. The ramps are self-supporting and simply rest on the ground (no holes, no piles, no permanent damage). If you move, the ramp can easily be taken down and reinstalled elsewhere, passed on, or sold.

Materials & ramp design

What are the advantages of a treated-wood ramp?

The advantages of treated wood are its lower purchase cost compared to aluminum, steel or concrete; its warm, natural finish that blends with the existing surroundings; and the option to be painted or stained to match the home.

What are the disadvantages of a treated-wood ramp?

The main drawbacks are its limited lifespan (10 to 15 years); the fact that it becomes very slippery when wet, icy or snowy; and its zero value at end of life since it is neither reusable nor recyclable, which fills up landfills.

What are the advantages of a modular aluminum ramp?

Optimal value for money (sturdy, no maintenance, won’t rust/rot); 100% recyclable and eco-friendly; the safest and most durable solution for Québec’s harsh climate. It is self-supporting, installs in winter without foundations, comes apart easily if you move, and keeps excellent resale value on the secondhand market.

What are the disadvantages of a modular aluminum ramp?

Its higher initial cost, its more industrial or medical look, and the grey metal surface, which can reflect light intensely and be glaring to the eyes.

How do you maintain a modular aluminum ramp in winter?

Eco-friendly option: Use sand or fine gravel for good traction without chemicals. To de-ice at very low temperatures (down to -30°C), favour calcium or potassium chloride, which are effective and gentler on the alloy.

Which products should be avoided for de-icing a ramp in winter?

Standard road salt (sodium chloride / blue or white salt) should be avoided. It is highly corrosive and will eventually dull, stain and corrode the aluminum over the winters.

What is the best ramp choice for you?

Treated wood suits tight budgets or temporary needs requiring a warm look. Aluminum remains the best long-term choice: although pricier upfront, it pays for itself in 5 to 7 years (savings on staining, zero maintenance) and offers a safe investment thanks to its high resale value.

See financial aid
Can different materials be combined (e.g., wood and aluminum)?

Yes, absolutely. We offer solutions combining the warmth and beauty of wood for the floor and guardrails, with our adjustable aluminum leg system to protect the structure from damp ground.
